What does 10% oil mean in wax melts & candles?

Paige McCaig ·

A big question in the wax melt & Candle community is centered around how much oil should I add to my candles or wax melts. This article will answer your question.

It's important that you understand the difference between both Fragrance Load & Fragrance Content and make an active decision as to which way you would like to work. These are not interchangable and you should choose the way that works best for you.

Fragrance Oil as Scent Load

This is the ratio of oil to wax.  A scent load of 10% means that you add 10% of the total wax mass as oil. An example of this would be if you had 100g of wax you would add 10g of oil (10%) of the total amount of mass. This would make the total mass of your product 110g. Fragrance/Scent Load does not refer to the percentage of oil in the candle as a whole.

 Fragrance Oil as Scent Content

This is where 10% of your total mass is contained within your scented product. If you had 100g of wax you would split this between 90g wax and 10g fragrance oil meaning 10% off your total mass.
